The school holidays beckon and many people will be heading overseas for a well-earned break. But what is the best way to pay for it? Using a credit card overseas leaves the card holder vulnerable to a weaker Australian dollar as the card conversion occurs at the time the card is used. Travel cards, on the other hand, are loaded with foreign currencies before departure at the exchange rates applicable at the time. With most market watchers expecting the Australian dollar to weaken further, the case for taking a travel card overseas is stronger than ever. Also, travel cards are stand-alone products and not linked to the traveller's everyday banking and other cards. They are used just like credit cards, including to book accommodation online. Researcher Canstar has completed its annual review of travel cards. As well as considering fees and benefits, Canstar also included the exchange rates received to provide an assessment of what the traveller gets for their money. Last year's winners — Qantas Cash and Velocity Global Wallet — retain their 5-star ratings this year. Then there can be a "reload fee", which is a percentage of the amount reloaded; the 5-star rated cards, though, do not have reload fees. It is called a "currency conversion fee" and can be up to almost 6 per cent of the currency being re-allocated. In Australia, users have to be informed on the ATM screen of any fees and consumers asked to agree before proceeding with the transaction. However, this does not always happen overseas and cardholders could be stung by ATM fees they are not travel of until it is too late. Mitchell Watson says travel cards should not be viewed as the complete solution to travel money needs. And you would probably want a credit card anyway just expiry case there is an emergency, Watson says. Travellers also have to be careful to leave sufficient time to reload their card if they need to put ozforex money onto the card, Watson says.
